Case filed over DU student Mimo’s death

A case has been filed with Badda Police Station over the death of theatre activist Munira Mahjabin Mimo.

The case was filed by Mimo's family on charges of abetment to suicide.

Police have arrested Sudip Chakraborty, an associate professor at the Theatre and Performance Studies Department of the University of Dhaka, over involvement in the incident.

Mimo, a student of the same department, was found dead at her residence in Badda around 8am on Sunday. According to Assistant Commissioner (AC) of Badda Zone under Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Asaduzzaman, her body was recovered hanging from a ceiling fan.

He said Mimo usually slept with her door open. However, after the Fajr prayer call, family members found the door closed. When she did not respond to repeated knocking, they broke it open and discovered her hanging. Police later recovered the body.

The body has been sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsy, he added.

Asaduzzaman further said that Sudip Chakraborty was arrested on suspicion of involvement. Preliminary investigation found that Mimo spoke with him for six minutes around 1am the previous night, and the call history was later deleted from his phone.

Kazi Tamanna Haque, chairperson of the Theatre and Performance Studies Department, expressed grief over Mimo’s death. She said that, according to teachers and students, Mimo left a handwritten note mentioning Sudip Chakraborty and a close classmate.

The note reportedly stated: “Sudip sir needs to be paid Tk50,000, Hani and Sudip sir, take care — returning the gifts sir gave.”
