Ex-DGFI official Afzal Naser put on remand in July killing case

A Dhaka court has placed former Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) official Md Afzal Naser on a fresh three-day remand in a case over the killing of Delwar Hossain during the July Uprising.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order following a hearing on Friday afternoon, state counsel Advocate Shamsuddoha Suman confirmed.

The accused was produced before the court after completing five phases of remand totalling 18 days.

Sub-Inspector Kafil Uddin of the Detective Branch (DB), also the investigating officer, sought a fresh five-day remand, saying preliminary findings indicate the accused’s involvement in the incident.

He told the court that further custodial interrogation was necessary to uncover the full circumstances and ensure a proper investigation.

The defence sought cancellation of the remand and applied for bail, while the prosecution opposed the plea. After hearing both sides, the court granted a three-day remand.

Earlier, on March 30, Afzal Naser was arrested by the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police from a house in the Mirpur DOHS area of the capital. He has since been remanded in multiple phases.

According to the case statement, an attack took place in the Fruit Market area of Mirpur-10 on the afternoon of July 19, 2024, during the anti-discrimination student movement. The accused allegedly opened fire from multiple directions, critically injuring protester Delwar Hossain.

He was first taken to the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases and later shifted to a private hospital in Shyamoli, where he died at 7:40 am on July 21, 2024.

Following the incident, Delwar Hossain’s wife, Liza, filed a murder case with Mirpur Model Police Station on July 6, 2025.
