Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami brought out a Boishakhi procession celebrating the timeless traditions of Bengali culture under the banner of “Deshiya Sanskritik Sangsad in the capital on Tuesday.
The procession began at the National Press Club and concluded at Ramna Park, where a range of rural cultural elements and patriotic songs were presented.
Participants carried traditional items such as polo (fish traps), dheki (manual rice husking tools), kula (winnowing fans), and khewa jal (fishing nets), symbolizing Bengal’s rich agrarian heritage. The event also featured performances of folk genres including jari, sari, and bhatiyali, creating a festive atmosphere among city residents.
At a pre-procession gathering, speakers called on people to resist the influence of foreign cultures, warning that the indiscriminate imitation of Western practices is eroding national identity. They stressed the need to preserve indigenous traditions to revive the true spirit and heritage of the Bengali people, and urged the government to play a more proactive role in this regard.
Alongside leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami, people from various walks of life in the capital joined the procession. Marking the Bengali New Year, participants sought to promote harmony while reaffirming their cultural identity.
