The family of Abu Sayed, who was killed during the July mass uprising in Rangpur, has demanded the highest punishment—the death penalty—for the accused in the crimes against humanity case.
His two brothers, Ramzan Ali and Abu Hossain, expressed this expectation to journalists on Thursday, after arriving at the International Crimes Tribunal to hear the verdict in the case.
While entering the courtroom, Abu Hossain, Sayed’s brother, said: “The verdict in this case will be delivered today (Thursday). We want the killers of my brother to receive the highest punishment—the death penalty. Those who are still absconding should be arrested quickly, and the government must ensure the verdict is implemented.”
Abu Sayed's elder brother Ramzan Ali said: “So far, we are satisfied with the judicial process. Let’s see what the verdict is. From our family, we demand the highest punishment—death sentence—for my brother’s killers.”
Abu Sayed, a 12th batch student of Begum Rokeya University's English department, was shot dead during students’ protests on July 16, 2024, in front of the university.
The killing intensified the movement, which ultimately culminated in a mass uprising, leading to the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024.
