DMP sets 7-day deadline to remove illegal bus counters

To ease traffic congestion in the capital and modernize traffic management, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has ordered the removal of all unauthorized inter-district bus counters operating within the city.

It has also warned that if the concerned parties fail to take action within seven days, legal measures—including cancellation of route permits—will be taken.

A public notice in this regard was issued from the DMP headquarters on Sunday.

The notice, signed by Acting DMP Commissioner Md Sarwar, stated: “All inter-district bus owners operating within the Dhaka Metropolitan Area are hereby informed that, to reduce traffic congestion, modernize traffic management, and ensure improved civic services, it is necessary to remove unauthorized inter-district night coach counters operating without valid route permits in different parts of the city. These illegal counters, along with activities such as parking and passenger boarding and disembarking, are obstructing traffic movement and causing congestion even at night.”

The notice further requested all concerned to refrain from operating such activities anywhere in the city except designated inter-district bus terminals—Gabtoli, Mohakhali, and Sayedabad—and to remove existing unauthorized night coach counters within seven working days of the notice.

Otherwise, strict legal action will be taken under Sections 37, 47, 82, and 90 of the Road Transport Act, 2018, along with other relevant laws. This may include summary trials or mobile court operations conducted by DMP magistrates, leading to penalties such as imprisonment, fines, cancellation of route permits, and confiscation of related equipment.

In the notice, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police sought cooperation from all concerned in implementing the directive.
