Fakhrul vows to build ‘happy, prosperous’ Bangladesh

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday said the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is committed to building a “truly happy and prosperous Bangladesh.”

He made the remarks after paying tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War at the National Martyrs' Memorial in Savar.

Marking Independence Day, Fakhrul said the country achieved independence after a nine-month war in 1971.

He also referred to Ziaur Rahman, describing him as the proclaimer of independence who inspired people to join the Liberation War.

Fakhrul said this year’s observance of Independence Day comes in what he described as a “fascist-free environment.”

He expressed regret that Khaleda Zia was not present.

He added that BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman is leading the party following the recent elections.

“We are committed to building a new Bangladesh and will work towards establishing a truly happy and prosperous country,” Fakhrul said.
