Attorney General Ruhul Quddus Kazal on Thursday said the government aims to ensure access to justice for all as part of building a “new Bangladesh.”
He made the remarks after paying tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War at the National Martyrs' Memorial in Savar.
Kazal said the aspiration for a new Bangladesh had taken shape through the 2024 mass movement led by students and the public, as well as the democratic process following the February 12, 2026, elections.
“We must work to fulfil the expectations of the people, which have long remained unmet,” he said, urging individuals in all responsible positions to act responsibly in their respective roles.
Responding to a question regarding Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami placing wreaths as an opposition party, the attorney general said it was an internal matter for the concerned political party.
“As a professional, I do not wish to comment on political matters. The relevant party can provide its own explanation,” he added.
Referring to past governance, Kazal said it could not be denied that institutions, including the judiciary, had roles in enabling what he described as a previous authoritarian system.
He said the current government, formed through what he termed free, fair and credible elections, has raised public expectations.
“The people expect a Bangladesh free from hunger and poverty, where the rule of law, fundamental rights and good governance are ensured,” he said.
He added that establishing justice and strengthening the legal system would be key to meeting those expectations.
“We want to guarantee access to justice as part of building the Bangladesh envisioned by its people,” the attorney general said.
