Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and opposition chief whip, has said that many aspirations of the country’s independence remain unfulfilled, forcing a new generation to once again sacrifice blood and lives.
He made the comment on Thursday morning while paying tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar.
“Today (Thursday) is Independence Day. On this occasion, we remember with respect those who stood for our independence, who were martyred, and the Birangonas,” he said.
Nahid added that Bangladesh should be built on the aspirations of 1971 and those of the 2024 mass uprising, grounded in equality and human dignity.
“We are working towards that goal,” he said.
He reiterated that many of the aspirations of independence remain unmet.
“That is why a new generation has had to shed blood and give their lives again. We want to ensure this does not happen in the future,” he said.
