Savar ‘serial killer’ Samrat dies after falling ill in jail

Moshiur Rahman Samrat, also known as Sabuj Sheikh, an accused serial killer from Savar, has died after falling ill in prison.

He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Tuesday morning after suddenly experiencing chest pain at Keraniganj Central Jail. Doctors later declared him dead.

According to police, Samrat fell ill inside the jail in the morning and was immediately rushed to the hospital by prison authorities.

Inspector (Operations) of Savar Model Police Station, Md Helal Uddin, confirmed the incident.

“Initially, it is believed that he died of a heart attack. The exact cause of death will be confirmed after the autopsy report,” he said.

Police said Samrat had been in jail since his arrest around two months ago. He was arrested on January 19 based on CCTV footage in connection with a double murder at a community centre in Savar.

During interrogation, he reportedly confessed to involvement in several other murders, police added. He was accused of a total of six murder cases.

Following his arrest, he was produced before a court and sent to jail, where he has been held at Keraniganj Central Jail since then.
