At least four people, including a brother and sister, were killed when a temporary floating bridge over the Brahmaputra River collapsed under the weight of holiday crowds in Dewanganj upazila of Jamalpur district on Saturday afternoon.
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon in front of Dewanganj Model Police Station.
The makeshift bridge, constructed with drums by municipal authorities, had been set up to facilitate travel to nearby river chars and to accommodate recreational visits during the Eid holiday.
The deceased were identified as Khadija, 12, and her brother Abdul Motaleeb, 6, children of Sher Ali from the Jhalurchar area of the upazila; Mayamoni, 10, daughter of Joynal Mia from Dakatia Para; and Abir Hossain, 16, from Gamaria.
Jamalpur Fire Service team leader Rabiul Islam confirmed the fatalities, stating that four people had died and one person was injured in the incident. The injured was rescued and taken to a local hospital for treatment.
According to eyewitnesses and local residents, the bridge collapsed midstream after being overwhelmed by a large number of Eid visitors. While many were able to swim to safety, several others reportedly fell into the river, with some initially feared missing.
State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M Rashiduzzaman Millat, also the MP for Jamalpur-1, visited the site following the incident.
