National Citizens Party (NCP) convener and opposition chief whip Nahid Islam has said there is no scope to reject the “July Charter” by invoking the constitution.
He warned that if the government fails to form a Constitutional Reform Commission, the opposition will apply maximum pressure both inside and outside parliament after Eid.
He made the remarks on Saturday morning while speaking to journalists after offering Eid-ul-Fitr prayers at the East Purbapara Jame Mosque in the Beraid area of the capital.
Nahid Islam said the oath-taking of the Constitutional Reform Commission was expected immediately after the formation of the 13th National Parliament, but its failure to materialize has created disappointment. He stressed that political will is essential to implement such reforms.
Responding to a question, the opposition chief whip said one month is not sufficient to assess or criticize the government’s performance and that a longer period of observation is necessary.
He also acknowledged that the government has taken some early initiatives, including the distribution of family cards, describing them as positive steps. However, he added that the opposition will continue to closely monitor the government’s activities.
