Moon sighting committee to meet Thursday

The National Moon Sighting Committee will meet on Thursday to determine the date of Eid-ul-Fitr in the country.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 5:45pm at the Baitul Mukarram meeting room of the Islamic Foundation.

The Ministry of Religious Affairs confirmed the matter in a press release on Wednesday.

According to the release, the meeting will be chaired by Religious Affairs Minister Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain.

The Islamic Foundation has requested that if the moon of Shawwal is sighted anywhere in Bangladesh, people inform the committee through the designated phone numbers or notify the concerned deputy commissioner or upazila nirbahi officer.

Meanwhile, the Eid holiday has already begun, prompting a surge of homebound travellers heading to their villages to celebrate with family members.

Crowds have increased at bus terminals and river ports, while shopping malls have also seen a rise in visitors in the final days of Ramadan.
