Inspector General of Police Ali Hossain Fakir has said that all necessary preparations have been completed to ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey for homebound passengers ahead of the upcoming Eid.
He made the remarks on Tuesday while visiting the Gabtoli Bus Terminal in the capital.
The IGP noted that passengers face significant inconveniences during Eid travel every year, particularly due to prolonged traffic congestion on highways. Many are unable to reach their destinations on time despite starting their journeys a day before Eid.
To address this, coordinated measures have been undertaken in collaboration with relevant authorities to improve highway management.
He further said that traffic congestion persists year-round in major markets and key intersections across the country.
Authorities have been instructed to strengthen police presence in these areas and engage local representatives to help ease congestion.
Emphasis has also been placed on ensuring that drivers and transport workers comply with traffic laws, alongside efforts to enhance their awareness and training.
Regarding law and order at the Gabtoli Bus Terminal, the IGP acknowledged the presence of drug users and snatchers in the area.
However, he assured that police remain vigilant, with all units nationwide directed to stay on duty at all times. He stressed that there will be zero tolerance for crime or any untoward incidents.
On the issue of illegal bus counters in the capital, he said long-distance bus counters will not be allowed to operate within Dhaka city.
Legal action will be taken to remove such counters, alongside efforts to decentralize the ticketing system.
Addressing passengers’ reluctance to file complaints despite being overcharged, the IGP said it is every citizen’s responsibility to be aware of the law. He emphasized that ignorance of the law is not an excuse and urged everyone to be more conscious of their rights.
