Four people, including a student of the Anthropology Department at Jahangirnagar University, were burned in a gas cylinder explosion at a house in Savar, Dhaka.
They were rescued and are being treated at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in the capital.
The incident occurred around 9:30pm on Tuesday on the second floor of a building in the Islamnagar area adjacent to Jahangirnagar University.
After receiving the report, two units of the Zirabo Fire Service rushed to the spot but returned after being informed that the fire had already been extinguished. Police later visited the scene.
Locals said a sudden cylinder explosion at night sparked a fire. Four people were rescued with burn injuries and taken to Enam Medical College Hospital.
According to preliminary information, two of the injured are the sons of the house owner, Abdur Rahman—Abdus Sobhan Raihan, 30, and Abdur Rahat, 27.
Raihan is the assistant organising secretary of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal’s Dhaka North unit. The other two injured are Saiful Islam Roni, 27, and Hasinur Rahman, 28. Roni is a student of Jahangirnagar University’s Anthropology Department and a member of the university unit of Chhatra Dal, as well as joint general secretary of the Dhaka North unit.
All the injured are residents of Islamnagar and the surrounding areas under the Ashulia police station.
Senior Station Officer Ahmedul Kabir of the Zirabo Modern Fire Service and Civil Defence Station said: “Two units were dispatched after receiving information about a fire caused by a gas cylinder. However, local people managed to extinguish the fire before we arrived.”
Abdullah Al Mamun, duty manager of Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar, said: "Four burn victims came to the hospital for treatment. After receiving primary care, they were referred to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.”
