BGB member found dead from gunshot wound in Kurigram

A member of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) was found dead from a gunshot wound at the Gangarhat border outpost in Phulbari upazila of Kurigram, police said.

The deceased was identified as Nasim Uddin, 23, a sepoy of Lalmonirhat BGB Battalion-15. He was serving at the Phulbari Gangarhat border outpost. He was from Khajura in Jhenaidah Sadar, and was the son of Abul Mandal.

The incident happened near the soldiers’ barracks of the Gangarhat border outpost around midnight Friday, said Phulbari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mahmud Hasan.

BGB claimed that the member died after allegedly shooting himself with his own service rifle inside the Gangarhat border outpost.

According to the inquest report, Nasim Uddin sustained a gunshot wound to the middle of his chest. Police and BGB said they suspect he may have died by suicide using his own service rifle, though the exact reason could not be immediately confirmed.

Police and BGB sources said that late at night, Nasim, wearing his uniform and carrying his service rifle, was preparing to go out on border patrol. At around 12:45am, a gunshot was heard near the soldiers’ barracks inside the outpost’s boundary wall.

BGB personnel rushed to the spot and found him lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was taken to the Phulbari Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Police reached the hospital around 3:30am and found the BGB member dead. Officers said a clear gunshot mark was visible in the middle of his chest.

OC Mahmud Hasan said BGB informed police that the sepoy may have shot himself with his own service rifle. An unnatural death case has been filed, and the body has been sent for an autopsy.

Lalmonirhat BGB Battalion-15 was called on mobile and through text message. No official statement from BGB was available at the time of filing this report.
