Spokesperson for Inqilab Moncho and potential independent candidate for Dhaka-8, Sharif Osman Hadi, was shot by unidentified assailants, prompting the deployment of additional police and army personnel at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Army members were also seen stationed at the entrance of the emergency department.
Security was visibly heightened in the DMCH area on Friday afternoon.
During a visit to the hospital, multiple army vehicles were seen entering the premises around 3:50pm, while police presence had already been reinforced.
Dr Mostak Ahmed, the residential surgeon of the DMCH emergency department, said Hadi was in critical condition when brought in. He was given CPR, and although his blood pressure has slightly improved, bullets remain lodged inside his head, with one shot near his ear.
