ICT prosecutor: Interpol notice to be sought for Hasina, Kamal

Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has said that Interpol will be notified to bring back Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who were convicted of crimes against humanity in connection with the July–August anti-discrimination student movement.

He made the comments on Tuesday while speaking to journalists at the ICT premises.

Tamim stated that this is the first time in the tribunal’s history that a compensation order of this nature has been issued. Once the certified copy of the verdict reaches the district magistrate, the authorities will determine how its various directives will be implemented.

He noted that an application for an arrest warrant and a Red Notice against the two fugitives is already in place. Now, instead of an arrest warrant, an application will be submitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the issuance of another Interpol notice based on the conviction warrants, after which the ministry will forward it to Interpol.

He added that the reconstituted ICT delivered its first verdict on Monday. The prosecution will receive a certified copy of the judgment, as will any arrested accused. The fugitives will also receive a free copy if they surrender or are apprehended within 30 days. Another copy will be sent to the district magistrate—the Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka—for implementation, as directed in the judgment.

Responding to a question about the timeline for issuing verdict copies, Tamim said the judgment was delivered on Monday and that several official procedures must be completed before the copies can be forwarded to the relevant authorities.

On Monday, the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death in a case related to crimes against humanity.

In the same case, former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun—who testified for the prosecution—was sentenced to five years in prison.
