Law Affairs Adviser Asif Nazrul on Wednesday clarified that the BNP has not demanded the restoration of a caretaker government system, but rather called for the current interim government to play an impartial role during the upcoming national election.
Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat, he said the matter was discussed during Tuesday’s meeting between BNP representatives and the government.
“What I understood from the discussion is that the BNP did not ask for a caretaker government. They said the interim government should act neutrally, like a caretaker government,” he explained.
According to him, the BNP sought assurances of neutrality, and the government responded that it is already maintaining such a stance, with the chief adviser personally guaranteeing impartiality.
The head of the government will also directly oversee major administrative transfers and postings to ensure fairness, he added.
When asked whether the Council of Advisers would be downsized during the election period, Asif Nazrul said no such issue had been raised.
“It is a matter for the Council of Advisers. No party has made any demand to reduce its size,” he noted.
The adviser also praised the manner in which army officers were presented before the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), describing it as a significant demonstration of respect for the judicial process.
“The cooperation extended by senior military officials, including the army chief, deserves high praise. Their respect for the rule of law is very encouraging,” he said.
On the decision to keep the officers in a sub-jail, he stressed that the matter falls entirely under the jurisdiction of the Home Ministry, which will take steps it deems appropriate.
