Press secretary: Six-party delegation signals readiness for reform, polls

Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam on Saturday said the presence of six political leaders at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session alongside Professor Muhammad Yunus sent a powerful message to the global community: Bangladesh is united and prepared for a democratic transition.

“By sitting together today, they conveyed to the world that we are ready for democratic transition,” Alam told reporters at a press briefing.

The six leaders present during Prof Yunus’s UNGA address included BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP leader Humayun Kabir, Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer Syeed Abdullah Muhammad Taher, Jamaat leader Mohammad Nakibur Rahman, National Citizen Party (NCP) Member Secretary Akhter Hossen, and NCP First Senior Joint Member Secretary Dr Tasnim Jara.

Alam said the interim government’s core responsibilities include implementing reforms, ensuring justice for the July–August killings and financial crimes, and preparing for national elections.

Describing Prof Yunus’s speech as “groundbreaking,” he noted that many reform initiatives have already been completed.

To support the transition, the chief adviser invited leaders from three major political parties to join him at the UNGA and related events.

“Their presence at the UNGA signals unity and a shared commitment to participate in the upcoming polls,” Alam said.

“This was a significant message—not just for Bangladesh, but for the entire world. We are fully ready for a democratic transition.”
