Ahadul Karim Khan, a staff photographer of Dhaka Tribune, has been honoured by the Bangladesh Journalists Welfare Trust for his courageous professional reporting during the July Uprising.
The award was presented on Sunday at a ceremony held at the Information Building in Dhaka. The event recognised families of martyred journalists, as well as injured and brave reporters who carried out their duties during the uprising.
Among those honoured was Ahadul Karim Khan of Dhaka Tribune, who was attacked while covering the anti-discrimination student movement on July 19, 2024, at the capital’s Paltan area. His left arm was fractured.
Ahad continued taking photos of the revolution with a sling on his right arm till August 5.
He said: “I feel honored for receiving the award. Moreover, it was thrilling to be a part of the history of Bangladesh.”
Ahad remarked that this recognition will inspire him to carry his work forward.
Ahad began his journalism career in 2013 as a photographer for 24bdtimes. Later, he served Daily Jagaran and international news agency Pressenza. Currently, he is a part of the photography team at Dhaka Tribune.
Mahfuz Alam, adviser to the Ministry of Information, attended the event as the chief guest and handed over the awards. Special guests included Shafiqul Alam, press secretary to the chief adviser, and Kawsar Ahmed, additional secretary of the Ministry of Information.
The program was chaired by Muhammad Abdullah, managing director of the Journalists Welfare Trust.
According to the organisers, a total of 192 injured journalists across the country and the families of five martyred journalists received certificates, crests, and financial support.
The families of the martyred journalists were granted Tk100,000 each, while injured and courageous journalists received Tk25,000 each. All the funds were disbursed from the trust's own resources.
The Bangladesh Journalists Welfare Trust announced that this recognition for brave journalists would continue in an even more organised manner in the future, promoting courage, integrity, and responsibility within the profession.
In total, 192 journalists from across the country were awarded in recognition of their bravery and professional commitment.
