Nahid calls for alternative proposals from critics of National Constitutional Council

Nahid Islam, the convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has said that while some political parties are in favour of forming a National Constitutional Council, he urged political parties opposing it to present alternative proposals.

He made the remarks while briefing journalists during the midday session of the third day of the second phase of consensus commission dialogues with political parties, held on Wednesday, at the Foreign Service Academy’s Doel Hall.

Nahid stated that the NCP fully supports the formation of a National Constitutional Council.

“In the past, several constitutional bodies—such as the Election Commission, Public Service Commission, Anti-Corruption Commission, and Human Rights Commission—have been politicized and made controversial. Most notably, the electoral system has been destroyed. The commission has consistently defended one-sided elections, while the Human Rights Commission has played no role in addressing enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings,” he said.

He further added: “We want these institutions to operate without government interference. To fulfil the aspirations of the people, these institutions must remain transparent.”
