RSF: 588 killed, 1,124 injured in road accidents in April

A total of 588 people were killed and 1,124 injured in 593 road accidents across the country in April, according to a monthly report published by the Road Safety Foundation on Sunday.

Among the deceased were 86 women and 78 children.

Of these incidents, 218 involved motorcycles, resulting in the deaths of 229 individuals.

Additionally, seven waterway accidents left eight people dead and four injured.

In 22 railway accidents, 24 people were killed and 6 others sustained injuries.

RSF compiled the report based on information from nine national dailies, seven online news portals and various electronic media outlets.

According to the report’s division-wise breakdown, Dhaka recorded the highest number of accidents, with 173 incidents resulting in 154 fatalities.

Rangpur saw the fewest, with 31 accidents causing 32 deaths.

At the district level, Chittagong reported 35 accidents and 46 deaths, while Nilphamari experienced accidents but no fatalities.

In the capital, Dhaka, 34 road accidents resulted in 19 deaths and 27 injuries.

The report identified several causes for the accidents, including unfit vehicles, reckless driving, unskilled drivers, the presence of slow-moving vehicles on highways and public disregard for traffic laws.

As recommendations, the report advised the development of skilled drivers, strict adherence to traffic laws, removal of slow-moving vehicles from highways and the construction of dedicated service roads.
