Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has said that the Election Commission will decide on the Awami League’s registration only after the official gazette banning its activities is published. He made the statement to the media on Sunday.
“The decision on the Awami League’s registration will be made after the gazette is published and discussed,” the CEC said.
“If it’s published tomorrow (Monday), we could make a decision as early as tomorrow (Monday).”
Earlier, students and citizens took to the streets demanding a ban on the Awami League’s political activities. In response, the interim government on Saturday night, suspended all activities of the party until its trial is completed.
Law Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul said, “A special meeting of the Advisory Council was held on Saturday, where an amendment to the International Crimes Tribunal Act was approved. Under this amendment, the tribunal can now impose penalties on any political party, affiliated body, or supporter group.”
He added that the council decided to ban all activities of the Awami League — including in cyberspace — under the Anti-Terrorism Act until the trial of the party and its leaders in the International Crimes Tribunal is complete.
