Rezaul Karim Mallick has been relieved of his duties as the chief of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Md Talebur Rahman confirmed on Sunday, saying that it is an internal posting and an official order regarding the transfer was issued from the DMP Headquarters the previous day.
"No one has been appointed to replace him yet," he said.
The move follows controversy surrounding the recent detention of model and Miss Earth Bangladesh winner Meghna Alam.
On April 7, DB officers detained her from her residence in Dhaka. Three days later, on April 10, the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court ordered her to be held for 30 days under the Special Powers Act of 1974.
The arrest sparked widespread criticism, prompting the DMP to issue an official statement on April 11 defending the action.
According to the statement, Meghna was taken into custody following legal procedures based on allegations that she posed a threat to national security, spread false information about prominent individuals in an attempt to harm inter-state relations, and was involved in a conspiracy to damage the country economically.
The DMP denied allegations of abduction, stating that she was lawfully detained and retains the right to seek legal recourse.
A 17th batch BCS (Police) cadre, he joined the Bangladesh Police in 1998 and has served in various units, including the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
