Gold price hits record high in Bangladesh, nears 2L per bhori

Gold prices in the local market have been increased once again, with the Bangladesh Jewellers’ Association (Bajus) raising the rate by Tk4,187 per bhori, setting the price of 22-carat gold at a record-high Tk163,214 per bhori.

Bajus announced the new rates in a statement issued on Saturday evening.

The updated prices will take effect from Sunday, the statement added.

According to the statement, the price of pure gold in the local market has increased, prompting the adjustment based on overall market conditions.

As per the revised rates, the price of 22-carat gold will be Tk163,214 per bhori (11.664 grams). Meanwhile, 21-carat gold will cost Tk155,796 per bhori, 18-carat gold Tk133,541 per bhori, and traditional method gold Tk110,271 per bhori.

Bajus further said that buyers must pay a government-mandated 5% VAT in addition to a minimum 6% making charge set by Bajus.

However, the making charge may vary depending on the jewellery’s design and quality.

Previously, on April 10, Bajus adjusted gold prices, which came into effect on Friday.

At that time, they raised the price of 22-carat gold by Tk2,403, setting the price at Tk159,027 per bhori.

The prices for 21-carat, 18-carat, and traditional method gold were set at Tk151,795, Tk130,112, and Tk107,344 per bhori respectively.

Now, just a day after those rates took effect, gold prices have once again been increased.

With this, the gold price in the country has been adjusted 20 times so far this year—raised 15 times and lowered only 5 times.

In 2024, gold prices were adjusted 62 times in total—35 increases and 27 decreases.

Despite the hike in gold prices, silver prices in the local market remain unchanged.

Currently, the price of 22-carat silver is Tk2,578 per bhori. Meanwhile, 21-carat silver is being sold at Tk2,449, 18-carat at Tk2,111, and traditional method silver at Tk1,586 per bhori.
