Eid prayers were held in all prisons across the country with inmates participating in the congregation.
The Department of Prisons organized the initiative to create a joyful atmosphere for inmates on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.
In a statement on Monday evening Md Jannatul Farhad, spokesperson and assistant inspector general (Development) of the Department of Prisons said: "To celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr in a festive atmosphere, Eid prayers were held with inmates under strict security measures in all prisons across the country.”
He added: “All inmates participated spontaneously in the Eid prayers. Additionally, special meals were served to them."
He also said: “For breakfast, inmates were served payesh (sweet rice pudding) and muri (puffed rice). Lunch included polao, beef and mutton curry, chicken roast, eggs, cold drinks, chomchom (a type of sweet), betel leaves, and salad.”
He further added: “Dinner consisted of rice, fish, and potato curry.”
Furthermore, various cultural programs and sports activities for both male and female inmates were arranged, allowing them to celebrate Eid with great enthusiasm.
Prison authorities also welcomed visiting relatives and well-wishers with gifts such as flowers, chocolates, batasha (sugar candies), kadma (sweet snacks), sweets, firni (rice dessert), and balloons.
This gesture of hospitality created a positive impression among visitors.
The statement also mentioned that, in celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr, all inmates will be granted one special visit and a phone call to their designated contact over the next three days.
They will also be allowed to receive home-cooked meals once during this period, with security measures ensured. Such initiatives aim to present the country's prison system in a new, humane light.
