Home Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said on Sunday that the prices of essential commodities are lower compared to the previous year.
“The prices are comparatively lower than last year. Journalists should acknowledge this. It is better to maintain lower prices rather than conduct drives against syndicates,” Jahangir said while speaking to journalists after inspecting the Public Order Management Division office in Mirpur.
The adviser urged businessmen not to raise prices during Ramadan, citing practices in other countries where prices tend to drop during religious festivals.
“Unfortunately, we do the opposite—raising prices during our religious festivals. I urge everyone to lower prices as much as possible during Ramadan,” he added.
Regarding the recent assault on two women, he said the incident occurred after the women threw tea on individuals who had objected to them smoking in public.
Jahangir also called on everyone to respect the sanctity of Ramadan by avoiding the public consumption of food.
