Leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam, led a road blockade in protest against the attack on students and the public near the residence of former minister AKM Mozammel Haque in Gazipur.
On Saturday, the protesters first held a rally in Rajbari upazila in the district before marching towards the deputy commissioner’s office, where they blocked the road.
During the protest, Arif Sohel, the secretary-general of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, said: "Our brothers have been wounded. They were attacked, yet the administration did nothing to help. We must be ready to defend ourselves."
He further added: "Fascist police officers must be expelled, and young people should be recruited anew. Immediately, raids must be carried out at all the offices of the Awami League and sealed off."
Later, at around 2:30pm, Sarjis Alam and Hasnat Abdullah joined the protest, and the two leaders sat on the ground with the protesters.
The crowd chanted slogans such as: "Light it up, fire, fire!", "Fire together in the chairs of Chhatra League!", "Fire together in the chairs of Awami League!", and "Delhi or Dhaka? Dhaka Dhaka!"
Earlier, in Gazipur’s Dhirasram area, an incident of attack and vandalism occurred at the house of former minister and Awami League leader AKM Mozammel Haque. At least 20 students and protesters were injured during the attack by the former minister's relatives and followers.
In response, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement called for a protest rally in Rajbari field at 1:30pm on Saturday.
