Bangladesh is currently grappling with a severe winter, with temperatures plummeting and dense fog blanketing the country.
The cold has disrupted daily life as icy northerly winds intensify the chill. Even by midday, the sun remains obscured in many places, while vehicles in northern areas are forced to use headlights during daytime due to poor visibility.
On the morning of Thursday, Chuadanga recorded the lowest temperature in the country this season at 9.8°C, underscoring the harshness of this winter.
What defines a cold wave?
Cold waves in Bangladesh are classified based on minimum temperatures as per the Bangladesh Meteorological Department:
Mild cold wave: 8.1–10°C
Moderate cold wave: 6.1–8°C
Severe cold wave: 4.1–6°C
Intense cold wave: Below 4°C
What to expect in January
According to the Meteorological Department, multiple cold waves are predicted to hit the country this month. The western, northern, and northeastern regions may experience one or two moderate to severe cold waves. Other parts of the country could see two to three mild to moderate cold waves.
Additionally, dense to thick fog is expected to persist in the northern, northeastern, western, southwestern, central regions, and river basins. Lighter fog is forecast for other areas.
Although January’s temperatures may remain slightly above normal, the reduced gap between day and night temperatures could amplify the perception of cold. The ongoing fog and biting winds are likely to make this winter particularly challenging for many.
As the mercury drops, staying warm and prepared is crucial to navigating this harsh season safely.
