Police have arrested Zia bin Kasem, 45, a key leader of the Maulana Saad Kandhalvi faction, in connection with the recent chaos and attack on worshippers at the Tongi Ijtema Ground.
Zia, a resident of the Savar police station area in Dhaka, is the sixth accused in a case filed by members of the Maulana Zubair faction at Tongi West police station.
Confirming the arrest, Double Mooring police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kazi Mohammad Rafiq Ahmed said Zia bin Kasem was arrested early Saturday.
The case, filed with Tongi West police station, pertains to the violent clashes at the Ijtema Ground in Gazipur.
Habibullah Raihan, media coordinator of the Tabligh Jamaat Bangladesh Shuraye Nezam, said Maulana Saad supporters were directly involved in the attack, which led to injuries and deaths of worshippers at the Ijtema Maidan.
The OC of Tongi West police station stated that the investigating officer of the case was present during the arrest and that the accused would be handed over to Tongi police station in Gazipur later on Saturday.
