Tragedy on Meghna: Kibria’s last voyage ends before daughter’s wedding

Golam Kibria, 65, the captain of the cargo vessel MV Al-Bakhera, met a harrowing end on what was supposed to be the final day of his 30-year career.

The waters of the Meghna River turned into a graveyard as seven lives were taken, including Kibria’s nephew Sheikh Shobuj, 26.

The cruel twist of fate has left their family shattered, mourning the unimaginable loss of two loved ones at once.

Kibria had spent decades navigating the rivers of Bangladesh, always returning home with stories of resilience and hope.

Monday’s journey was different—it marked the last day of his career.

With dreams of a grand celebration for his youngest daughter’s wedding on January 10, he had planned to return home after delivering his final cargo.

Speaking with tear-filled eyes, Kibria’s brother Siraj said: “This was supposed to be his last trip. He wanted to come home and organize a beautiful wedding for his daughter. Everything was ready. He had spoken to us about his plans just days before.”

Kibria’s nephew, Sheikh Shobuj, had only recently joined the vessel, beginning his career a mere month and a half ago.

Shobuj’s brother, Faruk Hossain, recalled their last conversation: “Sunday night, my uncle spoke about the wedding preparations. He promised he would come home soon. We never imagined it would be the last time we’d hear his voice.”

The tragedy unfolded on the Meghna River near the Ishambala canal in Chandpur.

The MV Al-Bakhera had been carrying 720 tons of urea fertilizer for the Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation.

Onboard were eight crew members; by morning, only one, Jewel, remained alive, barely clinging to life.

Jewel’s testimony paints a grim picture of the night.

Ship owner Diplu Rana recalled his last conversation with Kibria: “He told me they would anchor at a convenient spot. After that, we lost contact. Later, we learned of the massacre from our other vessel, MV Mugni-3. Seven of the eight onboard were killed.”

For Kibria’s family, the heartbreak is unbearable.

His life was dedicated to providing for his family, and ensuring his children’s futures. Now, his daughter’s wedding will be a day not of joy but of mourning.
