President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Saturday paid heartfelt tribute to Begum Rokeya, a pioneer of women's education and a social reformer.
On the occasion of Begum Rokeya Day-2024, which will be observed on Sunday, he highlighted her contributions to promoting equal rights for men and women.
He said: "I commend the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs for organizing the Begum Rokeya Day-2024 celebrations and the Begum Rokeya Padak ceremony. On this occasion, I pay deep respect to the memory of the illustrious Begum Rokeya, a trailblazer of women's awakening and a symbol of human emancipation."
Begum Rokeya was a writer, educator, social reformer, and a key figure in the women's rights movement, the president said.
"There is no alternative to education in empowering women to become respected members of society," he said, adding that Begum Rokeya, recognizing this, inspired Muslim women in the Indian subcontinent to pursue education and played a monumental role in advancing education among Muslim women.
"The name of Begum Rokeya will be forever enshrined as a torchbearer in the history of women's education in Bangladesh," the president said.
He highlighted Begum Rokeya's pioneering efforts to eliminate discrimination and exploitation against women, saying that her thoughts were rooted in modernity, progressiveness, and humanity.
Her unwavering struggle against the socio-cultural barriers, prejudices, and religious fanaticism of her time is vividly reflected in her timeless writings, he added. "The central theme of her literary works was to reveal women's true potential and make them aware of their rights."
The president also extended heartfelt congratulations to the recipients of the "Begum Rokeya Padak-2024" for their outstanding contributions to the advancement of women and society.
Expressing hope, President Shahabuddin said: "Inspired by Begum Rokeya's achievements and philosophy, the women of Bangladesh will continue to strive toward achieving their aspirations and goals."
