Family temple set on fire in Turag

A family temple in the Turag area of the capital was reportedly set on fire late on Friday night.

A case has been filed with Turag police station against unidentified miscreants in connection with the incident.

On Saturday, Nuruzzaman, the investigation officer at Turag police station said unidentified perpetrators allegedly set fire to the family temple of Babul Chandra Ghosh, a resident of the Dhour area in Turag.

Police inspected the scene on Friday night after receiving the report. An investigation is being carried out with the utmost importance, he added.

Babul Chandra Ghosh, the plaintiff in the case, told Prothom Alo that they went to bed around 11:30pm on Friday after dinner. The Shri Shri Mahabhagya Lakshmi Narayan Temple, a family temple, is located next to his bedroom. Around 2:30am they woke up upon hearing footsteps and saw the temple on fire. They managed to extinguish the flames with the help of locals.

Babul Chandra added that the miscreants had opened a tin shed at the back of the temple, poured a petrol-like substance, set the temple on fire, and fled. He further mentioned that their family temple is operated through an International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Iskcon) temple located nearby.

Some Indian media claimed that the temple was linked to the Iskcon in Bangladesh. However, Hrishikesh Gouranga Das, a spokesperson for the organization, clarified to The Daily Star that the temple is not directly affiliated with the organization.
