Ali Riaz: Nationwide survey on constitutional reform to begin next week

The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) will begin a nationwide survey next week to gather public opinions on constitutional reforms.

Professor Ali Riaz, the head of the constitution reform commission, made the statement to the media on Tuesday at the National Parliament office.

This announcement comes after BNP submitted a written proposal on constitutional amendments.

Professor Ali Riaz said: "The constitution is not just about elections. However, based on the opinions received regarding elections in the constitution, we will formulate recommendations. The government will be able to specify when and how elections will take place."

Regarding BNP's proposal, Ali Riaz said: "We have not read their proposals yet. Until we do, we cannot comment. We have also received proposals from other parties, which we will review as well. It is our responsibility to formulate recommendations through discussions with various stakeholders."

Ali Riaz further mentioned that more than 50,000 opinions have been submitted on the constitutional reform website.

"We are continuing discussions with stakeholders. We will also engage with several other organizations and prominent individuals," he added.

He also said: "Starting next week, BBS will begin the nationwide survey on the constitution to ensure we gather the views of all types of people—urban, rural, elderly, and youth. This is our task, and progress is being made. We are hopeful, and political parties and civil society are providing cooperation."
