Police have arrested five leaders of the Awami League in connection with an attack on the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the murder of a student.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) of Khilgaon and Kalabagan police stations made the arrests.
The arrested individuals are, Mohammad Babul alias Koshai Babul, 54, a member of Khilgaon Ward 2 Awami League, Mohammad Azizul Haque Mukul, 49, General Secretary of Khilgaon police station Shantipur Unit Awami League, Fahad Ullah, 40, former General Secretary of Paltan Chhatra League, Kausar Howlader, 55, former President of Kalabagan police station Awami League Secchasebok League, Hasan Al Roman, former President of New Model Degree College Chhatra League.
This information was confirmed by Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Media and Public Relations Deputy Police Commissioner, Mohammad Talebur Rahman.
According to sources from Khilgaon police station, on the afternoon of July 19, during the student and public protest in Banashre Block G, local Awami League leaders and activists, along with members of its affiliated organizations, carried out a sudden attack, including bomb explosions and indiscriminate gunfire.
As a result, physiotherapy technician Syed Nazmul Hasan was shot in the chest and back and died at the scene. On October 13, Abdul Malek , 70, a relative of the deceased, filed a murder case at Khilgaon police station.
Sources from the police station also mentioned that, based on CCTV footage analysis, intelligence information, and technological support, two of the accused—Babul and Azizul—were arrested on Monday night from Goran area of Khilgaon.
Fahad was arrested early Saturday morning from Goran Shantipur area.
Meanwhile, sources from Kalabagan police station reported that on August 4, during a peaceful procession of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Panthapath Signal to Science Laboratory area, activists of various Awami League affiliated organizations launched an unexpected attack and opened fire when the procession reached in front of Green Life Hospital. As a result, three individuals were injured by gunfire, including Russell Howlader, 38, President of the Sramik League of Kalabagan police station, Md Riaz, 35, Office Secretary of Ward 16 Kalabagan police station, and Osman Gani, 33, of the Krishak League of Kalabagan police station.
On November 7, Kazi Yad Moinuddin filed an attempt to murder case at Kalabagan police station regarding this incident.
Police sources further mentioned that, following the analysis of CCTV footage, intelligence, and technological assistance, two more of the accused—Kausar and Hasan Al-Roman—were arrested on November 10, at 12:30am from Kalabagan Bus Stand.
The arrested individuals were later sent to court in connection with the respective cases.
