Tensions rise in Gulistan ahead of rival political programs

Tensions have been running high in Gulistan, Dhaka, as Awami League and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, are to hold separate programs in the area on Sunday.

The Awami League announced a protest march at 3pm at Gulistan's Zero Point to mark Noor Hossain Day.

They call for the removal of undemocratic forces while demanding the restoration of democratic processes.

In response, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement vowed to thwart this rally and announced a counter-program by holding a public rally at the same place at 12pm.

Since last night, the students have taken position around Zero Point, with activists from various political factions, including the BNP, gathering to counter the Awami League's program.

The area is now under heavy surveillance, and law enforcement agencies have set up multiple checkpoints fearing clashes.

Since morning, the situation in Gulistan has become increasingly tense, with frequent marches from opposition groups and supporters.

The traffic department has also taken measures to ensure the movement of vehicles is not hindered, with extra personnel stationed throughout the area.

Several senior police officers, including the DC of the Ramna Zone and additional high-ranking officials, have been monitoring the situation.

A senior police official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed that security personnel have been stationed in Gulistan since last night, carefully managing the crowd and ensuring the smooth flow of traffic. "Our primary objective is to ensure the safety of the public while keeping an eye on the developments at Zero Point.”

Meanwhile, to maintain law and order, 191 platoons of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed across Dhaka and other parts of the country.

This information was provided in a message by BGB Headquarters Public Relations Officer Md Shariful Islam on Sunday morning.

Since being ousted by a student and public uprising on August 5, the Awami League has not held any public activities.
