Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has expressed deep concern over recent targeted attacks, indiscriminate lawsuits, and harassment directed at journalists and media organizations.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, TIB questioned whether "freedom of the press" has become merely a slogan and urged the interim government to take robust measures to ensure a safe, intimidation-free environment for media professionals in Bangladesh.
TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said that press freedom in Bangladesh has suffered greatly over the past 14 years, with the country dropping 42 positions in global rankings.
Despite recent promises from the interim government to protect media independence, vested groups continue to target media outlets with slander campaigns, threats, and lawsuits, Dr Iftekharuzzaman said.
He warned that these actions threaten the aspirations of a "New Bangladesh" built on free thought and non-discriminatory ideals.
Dr Iftekharuzzaman highlighted recent incidents involving arbitrary threats, lawsuits, and cancellations of press accreditation, which he described as reminiscent of authoritarian governance and a contradiction of the values for which the people of Bangladesh have fought.
“This is not a positive sign for the country’s future,” he said, adding that such efforts to control dissent create a pathway back to authoritarian rule.
While acknowledging the need to investigate legitimate criminal offenses involving journalists, TIB warned that indiscriminate lawsuits and other forms of harassment only serve the agenda of those seeking to suppress press freedom under the pretext of rooting out authoritarian sympathizers.
TIB called for an immediate end to such practices, urging the interim government to stop "witch-hunting" activities and to prioritize creating a conducive environment for independent journalism.
TIB also encouraged media outlets and journalists to exercise responsible journalism and prevent abuses of their influence, which is essential for upholding public trust and advancing democratic values.
