Abul Kashem Fazlul Haq, an essayist, researcher, and literary critic, has been appointed as the President of Bangla Academy for the next three years by the interim government.
A notification regarding this appointment was issued by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs on Sunday.
The notification said that, according to the Bangla Academy Act, the distinguished essayist and prominent researcher Abul Kashem Fazlul Haq has been appointed as the President of Bangla Academy for three years, subject to conditions from the date of taking over duties.
Abul Kashem Fazlul Haq was a professor in the Bangla Department at Dhaka University.
He is the convener of the "State Language Bengali Protection Committee," which was formed to ensure the use of the Bangla language.
He succeeds Selina Hossain, who resigned from the position on October 17, after taking office in February 2022.
Regarding his appointment, he said: “Bangla Academy is our national institution of intellectual thought. However, it has not been utilized properly for a long time.”
“Now, with everyone's collective cultural efforts, we will strive to restore the Academy to its original character,” he added.
