Former mayor Atiq arrested in Mohakhali

Former Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayor Md Atiqul Islam has been arrested from Dhaka’s Mohakhali DOHS area.

He was arrested by Mohammadpur police on Wednesday night, Tejgaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Mobarak Hossain confirmed.

He said that former mayor Atiqul Islam was arrested around 6:30pm in the evening.

He has three cases filed against him in Mohammadpur police station related to the anti-discrimination student movement.

He will be presented in court on Thursday, where a remand will be sought.

Business leader Atiqul Islam was first elected as the mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation in a by-election held on February 28, 2019, as a candidate of the Awami League.

He was re-elected as mayor in the election held on February 1, 2020.

Prior to this, he served as the president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) for the 2013-14 term.
