Nahid: New national day on the cards commemorating July revolution

Information Adviser Md Nahid Islam has said that a new national day may be added to commemorate the mass uprising of July-August that toppled the Awami League regime.

‘‘The July and August mass uprisings may lead to the addition of a new day. After all, it's a new uprising,” he said.

Nahid was speaking at a press conference held at the Secretariat on Wednesday.

Addressing the cancellation of eight national days recognized by the previous government, Nahid said: "The fascist Awami League imposed a number of their own days as national days. Therefore, those days will no longer remain," he added.

Regarding the removal of March 7 from the list of national days, he said: "March 7 is important, but not significant enough to be a national day. The Awami League has undermined many such days."

Clarifying that March 7 is not being erased, Nahid said: "Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is certainly not the father of the nation. Many people have played a role in the history of this land, and many have fought. History is multifaceted.”

He added: “The Awami League has omitted the contributions of Maulana Bhasani. Now is the time to remember everyone’s role."

The interim government has decided to cancel eight national days.

This information was shared in a post from the verified Facebook page of the interim government’s chief adviser on Wednesday.

The days to be cancelled include:

  • Historic March 7
