NID data leak: Case filed against 19, including Joy, Palak

A case has been filed against 19 individuals, including Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the son of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her ICT advisor, and former state minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak, in connection with the alleged leak of National Identity Card (NID) information from the National Data Repository (Data Centre).

The case also names 15 to 20 unidentified accused.

Enamul Haque, 39, lodged the case under the Cyber Security Act at Kafrul police station in Dhaka early Wednesday.

Kazi Golam Mostafa, officer-in-charge of Kafrul police station, confirmed the information on Wednesday morning.

According to the case statement, Sajeeb Wazed Joy and Zunaid Ahmed Palak allegedly abused their authority to facilitate the sale of NID information through an organized syndicate. The accused reportedly allowed Digicon Global Services Limited to use NID information for business transactions with various organizations, compromising national and personal security.

The case claims that this sensitive information was sold to around 182 organizations inside and outside Bangladesh.

The trafficking of this data to third parties has caused widespread insecurity, with allegations of embezzling around Tk20,000 crore from the sale of personal information.

Meanwhile, Zunaid Ahmed Palak has been arrested in multiple cases since the fall of the Awami League government on August 5. He is currently being remanded in connection with various other cases.
