Silent Zone area launched at airport to combat noise pollution

In a significant move to address the escalating issue of noise pollution, the government has launched a “Silent Zone” area around Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

Syeda Rizwana Hasan, adviser to the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, on Tuesday, unveiled the plan during an event at the Civil Aviation Authority headquarters in Dhaka.

The initiative aims to reduce honking in the three-kilometre area surrounding the airport, starting with public awareness campaigns and followed by strict enforcement of noise regulations.

This marks a crucial step toward creating a quieter and healthier urban environment for residents.

Speaking at the event at the Civil Aviation Authority headquarters, the adviser emphasized that the campaign will begin with public awareness efforts, followed by stringent enforcement of noise regulations.

A three-kilometre radius around the airport has been officially designated as a “Silent Zone,” aiming to create a horn-free environment.

"Initially, we will focus on key areas before expanding our efforts throughout Dhaka, and ultimately to other divisional cities," she stated.

The adviser also shared her personal commitment to the initiative, noting: "My vehicle does not use a horn, and I hope other drivers will be inspired to do the same."

As part of the initiative, the renewal of driving licenses will include a clause prohibiting honking, with an initial fine of Tk500 for violators.

While violations will be reviewed in October and November, strict enforcement of fines is set to commence in December.

The adviser highlighted the serious health implications of noise pollution, which contributes to conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and neurological disorders.

She warned that incessant honking is also harming residents' hearing abilities, positioning the “Silent Zone” program as a vital step toward mitigating these health risks.

The event was attended by notable figures, including Nasrin Jahan, secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism; Tapan Kumar Biswas, additional secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change and other officials.
