Bangladesh Mahila Parishad has called on the government to take adequate measures so that Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of the Hindu community, is held peacefully across the country.
The organization formed a human chain in front of the National Press Club on Tuesday. The program was presided over by Fawzia Muslim, president of the Central Committee of the Bangladesh Mahila Parishad.
She said that the constitution gives all the citizens of the country equal rights, and as a result, everyone should be able to observe their religious traditions and events. She called on everyone to shun the path of ill politics and ensure democratic rights for the people.
General Secretary Maleka Banu said a vested quarter always tries to create hurdles in observing the Durga Puja, and this has been going on every year. She said that the countrymen do not want to see its repetition. She urged everyone to be careful of attempts to disrupt communal harmony through various preaching.
Speakers at the event said that the country gained its independence through the sacrifices of many people. Therefore, there is no scope for any division based on religion. Some people create an adverse environment by attacking and breaking idols every year when the Durga Puja arises. This goes against the spirit of an independent nation, they added.
They also called on the government to take stern measures to thwart such attempts by the quarter so that Durga Puja can be held peacefully.
Bangladesh Mahila Parishad observed the human chain program in all the districts till yesterday, and it plans to submit memoranda to the deputy commissioners in this regard in the coming days.
