Six detained over murder of Lt Tanzim in Cox's Bazar

Six suspected robbers have been detained from Cox’s Bazar over the tragic death of Lieutenant Tanzim Sarwar Nirjon, who was fatally attacked by assailants while on duty in Chakaria, Cox's Bazar.

The detainees are- Md Babul Prokash, 44, Md Helal Uddin, 34, Md Anwar Hakim, 28, Md Arif Ullah, 25, Md Ziabul Karim, 45, Md Hossain, 39. They have confessed their direct involvement in the murder incident.

Among them, Md Babul Prakash has been identified as the primary financier of the incident. He also confessed to fatally stabbing Lieutenant Tanzim.

The other detained individuals include Md Helal Uddin, the second-in-command of the robbery gang; Md Anwar Hakim, the driver; Md Arif Ullah, an armed member; and informants Md Ziabul Karim and Md Hossain, who have admitted to their direct involvement in the incident.

They were detained during an operation conducted by the Bangladesh Army.

Inter Services Public Relation Directorate (ISPR) confirmed the matter in a press release on Wednesday.

From the detained robbers, two homemade firearms, 11 rounds of various types of ammunition, a knife used in the murder, a pickup truck, and a motorcycle were recovered.

Initial interrogation revealed that four of the detained individuals were directly involved in the crime, while the remaining two provided assistance through information.

The Bangladesh Army's operation to arrest other involved members of the robbery gang is ongoing, the release added.

The six detained individuals have been handed over to the Chakaria police.

The process to filing a case with Chakaria police station is underway, it added.

Lt Tanzim Sarwar, a promising young officer, was commissioned into the Army Service Corps (ASC) on June 8, 2022, from the Bangladesh Military Academy’s 82nd long course, following his studies at Pabna Cadet College.

He was killed while attempting to thwart a robbery in Chakaria upazila, Cox's Bazar, around 3:30am on Tuesday. Lt Tanzim died after being stabbed while pursuing the robbers.
