NIDs of two brothers of former army chief Gen Aziz revoked

The Election Commission (EC) has cancelled the national identity cards (NID) of Haris Ahmed and Tofail Ahmed, also known as Joseph, the two brothers of former army chief General Aziz Ahmed.

The EC has invalidated a total of four NIDs, two under each of their names.

Md Mahbub Alam Talukder, secretary of the EC’s National Identity Registration Division, disclosed the information on Tuesday.

Using the influence of former army chief General Aziz Ahmed, both brothers concealed information and changed their names to obtain national identity cards.

Following media reports on the issue, the EC's NID division formed a three-member committee to investigate how Haris Ahmed and Tofail Ahmed, alias Joseph, managed to obtain NIDs using false information.

Based on the committee's recommendations, their IDs were canceled.

Shariful Alam, the EC's director of public relations, confirmed that the NIDs created by Haris Ahmed and Tofail Ahmed, alias Joseph, have been canceled by the Election Commission. They will no longer be eligible for any NID-related services in the country.

Mahbub Alam Talukder, director general of NID, said that General Aziz Ahmed served as the Chief of Army Staff of Bangladesh from June 2018 to June 2021.

In addition to changing their names, Aziz Ahmed's two brothers, Haris and Joseph, also altered their parents' names.

Haris Ahmed changed his NID name to "Mohammad Hasan," while Joseph adopted the name "Tanvir Ahmed Tanzil." They also changed their addresses.

In 2019, Haris Ahmed even changed his photograph on the NID card, with former army chief General (retired) Aziz Ahmed recommending the photo update.
