Child drowns in Dhaka College pond

A child drowned in a pond at Dhaka College on Monday around 12pm.

Md Siam, 10, was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where the doctors declared him dead upon arrival. The incident was confirmed by Mehedi Hasan, the station officer of the Siddique Bazar Fire Service.

Siam, a resident of Pachli village in Gafargaon upazila of Mymensingh, was the son of Md Nazrul Islam, a local shoe trader. He was the second of three siblings—two sisters and a brother—and was studying at Azimpur New Paltan Faizul Ulum Madrasa in Dhaka.

According to Abir Hossain, the student of Dhaka College who brought Siam to the hospital, the child had gone swimming in the college pond with several others after a game of football. While swimming, Siam drowned and was unable to resurface.

Mehedi Hasan of the Siddique Bazar Fire Service said: "We received a call via the emergency hotline 999 and rushed to Dhaka College. By the time we arrived, students had already pulled the child from the water. We transported him to DMCH in our vehicle, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead by the doctors."

Siam’s uncle, Nurul Islam, said: "We were informed by the madrasa teachers in the afternoon that Siam had drowned in the pond. When we arrived at DMCH, we found him already deceased."
