850kg of ilish seized near Comilla border during smuggling attempt

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Sunday seized 850kg of ilish while they were being smuggled through the Indian border in Comilla.

However, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

The ilish was seized in the afternoon in the Chanpur Bridge area of Pachthubi union in Comilla Sadar upazila, Lieutenant Colonel Md Iftekhar Hossain, commander of BGB-10, confirmed.

“Around 5pm, a syndicate was attempting to smuggle the ilish to India using 35 boxes. Upon receiving a tip-off, the BGB conducted a raid, but the smugglers managed to flee. The fish was later seized. The market value of the 850kg of ilish is approximately Tk9.52 lakh.”

Following BGB protocol, the seized fish was sold, and the proceeds were deposited into the government treasury.
