Flood situation improves in Northern region; Eastern region faces new risks

Heavy rains have caused water levels to rise in rivers across the Chittagong Division, including the Halda and Sangu rivers.

As a result, low-lying areas in Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, Khagrachari, Feni, Comilla, Noakhali, and Lakshmipur districts may experience flooding.

Similarly, there is a risk of increased water levels in rivers across the Dhaka, Barisal, and Khulna divisions. However, the flood situation in the northern regions is improving.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre has reported that water levels in all major rivers are below the danger mark. Water levels in the Muhuri, Feni, and Matamuhuri rivers are decreasing, while water levels in the Halda and Sangu rivers are rising in the Chittagong division.

According to weather forecasts, heavy rainfall in the country and upstream may lead to increased water levels in the rivers of the Chittagong Division over the next 24 hours, which could result in flooding in low-lying areas of Cha, Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, Khagrachari, Feni, Comilla, Noakhali, and Lakshmipur districts.

In contrast, water levels in the rivers of Dhaka, Barisal, and Khulna Divisions are stable.

According to weather agencies, a deep land depression is currently affecting areas around Jessore and its vicinity. Meanwhile, water levels in the Brahmaputra River are stable, while those in the Jamuna River are decreasing. Over the next five days, water levels in the Brahmaputra and Jamuna rivers are expected to decline gradually and remain below the danger mark.

Water levels in the Ganges River are stable, while those in the Padma River are decreasing. Over the next three days, water levels in the Ganges and Padma rivers are expected to remain stable. However, there may be a decline in water levels in the following two days, with a possibility of them dropping below the danger mark.

In the Rangpur Division, water levels in the Teesta, Dharla, and Dudhkumar rivers are stable. Over the next three days, these river levels may decrease gradually and remain below the danger mark.

In the Sylhet Division, water levels in the Surma and Kushiyara rivers are decreasing, while those in the Manu, Sarigowain, Dholai, and Khowai rivers are stable. Over the next three days, water levels in these rivers may decrease and stay below the danger mark.

The Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall warning, indicating that due to the influence of the land depression, heavy to very heavy rainfall may occur in parts of Rangpur, Rajshahi and Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, and Chittagong Divisions from 9am on September 14 for the next 48 hours.

There is also a risk of landslides in some hilly areas of the Chittagong Division.
