Ziko murder: Khulna Awami League leader arrested

The Rapid Action Battalion on Thursday arrested the former chairman of the Fulthala Upazila and current President of the Awami League's Fulthala unit, for his alleged involvement with the murder of BNP leader Sheikh Sajjaduzzaman Ziko.

The arrestee has been identified as Sheikh Akram Hossain, 62.

Lieutenant Colonel Faizul Arifin of RAB-6 said that on on Thursday, an elite team from RAB-6 and the Batiapara Camp received a tip-off that the Sheikh Akram Hossain was fleeing towards Dhaka.

Acting on this information, the team set up a checkpoint at the Golchattar area of Batiapara in Kashiani and arrested Hossain from a private car around 8:45pm.

Hossain has been handed over to the Fulthala police station in Khulna.

According to the case statement, on October 22, 2022, party activists from Fulthala, traveling in several trawlers from Shikirhat Ghat, were attacked by Awami League men armed with shotguns, rifles, pistols, machetes, Chinese axes, rods, bombs, and sticks.

The miscreants created a terror-filled environment by shooting and detonating bombs.

The BNP activists, in fear, retreated and sought treatment at the Fulthala Upazila Health Complex, where the attackers continued their assault.

Many, including victim Sheikh Sajjaduzzaman Ziko, had to leave the health complex.

Later, on October 24, 2022, around 10pm, while seeking treatment at a dispensary, some miscreants attacked Ziko again and he died.

The miscreants also obstructed the victim's post-mortem and burial.

When an attempt was made to file a case at the police station following the death, the case was refused.

Consequently, on August 29, the victim's relative, SM Monirul Hasan Bappi, filed a murder case with the Fulthala police station.
