The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has seized approximately 650kg of ilish fish near the Indian border in the Comilla region.
The fish was confiscated on Wednesday afternoon in the North Anandapur area of Burichong Upazila, within 100 yards of the 2067 Main Pillar of the border.
The news was confirmed by Lieutenant Colonel AM Jaber Bin Jabbar, Commander of the BGB-60 battalion.
It was reported that around 1pm, BGB patrol teams were active in the area when the smugglers were transporting the ilish.
Upon sensing the BGB patrol, the smugglers fled, taking most of their cargo into India due to the proximity of the border.
A BGB source indicated that due to the proximity to the border, most smugglers were able to escape into India, making their capture impossible.
However, the fish was successfully recovered.
The BGB notified their team about the smugglers' escape.
The BGB official stated that the seized ilish fish, valued at approximately Tk1,600 per kg, amounts to about Tk1,025,600.
The fish has been sold through auction, and the proceeds have been deposited into the government treasury.
